While many folks opt to keep their RV camping trips to the spring and summer, there are also plenty of intrepid campers who like to use their RVs all year round, even through the winter! Whether you live in your RV full-time or you simply want to use it for soothing winter getaways and visiting friends and family over the holidays, here’s how to ready yourself and your RV for cold temperatures and inclement weather.

Sealing & Insulating

You’ll need to thoroughly insulate your RV to help it keep in warm air and keep out cold air. Check the seals on windows, doors, and slide-outs and make sure they are sound. You can add window film to the windows to keep in warm air, along with putting up heavy drapes. Adding some foam insulation around your vents will also help prevent heat from escaping.

Water System

In cold temperatures, your RV’s water system is vulnerable to freezing, so it’s a good idea to look into using a heated water hose if you want to use campground hookups. You can also simply fill up the freshwater tank and use that for your water source, as it’s less likely to freeze. If your water pump is not sufficiently insulated, you can place a space heater near it to warm it up (just make sure it’s not going to cause a fire).

Packing Supplies

You should make sure that your RV has emergency gear loaded onto it that is suitable for surviving cold weather conditions. Extra non-perishable food and water, a hatchet or ax, duct tape, rope, blankets and warm jackets, a first-aid kit, a repair kit, and an emergency radio are the items you’ll want to stow on your RV before you go on your winter camping trip.
