Class A, B, or C

Learn the industry classification of motorhomes according to Class A, B, and C:

  • Class A motorhomes: These are usually the biggest machines, and they are a lot like a bus. Imagine a rock star on tour. You’ll see a flat front with a wide, panoramic window. Large families and full-time RVers often choose these, and they’re generally an expensive and luxurious option, with the best and most comfortable amenities. You can also find smaller Class A RVs that don’t look like a bus, but they are the same width the whole way down – like a box – with that big wide windshield.
  • Class B motorhomes: These are vans, ranging from hippie VWs to Amazon delivery-type vehicles. This is a smaller, nimbler option. While they can be quite luxurious, they have limited space and seldom sleep more than two people. Anything that looks like a van is a Class B.
  • Class C motorhomes: This is the Classic camper shape, like a truck or van in the front with a big box affixed to the back. They are narrower at the front and get a couple of feet wider where they transition to the living quarters. These are a popular choice for families and first-timers, offering ample space and a moderate price tag. Class C motorhomes have that Goldilocks appeal of not too big, not too small in terms of price, size, and luxury.

What Amenities Do You Want?

RVs can be minimalist or maximalist in terms of amenities. As you’d expect, bigger and more expensive rigs have more amenities. Fulltimers are among those attracted to house-like features like a second bathroom, an entertainment center, a fireplace, and laundry facilities. High-end buyers can choose from lots of deluxe features like multiple seating areas, outdoor kitchens, outdoor TVs, and more. Weekenders might be content with basic amenities like a bathroom, kitchen, dinette, and beds.

Size Matters

While it’s easy to think bigger equals better, remember you need to pay for it, put gas in it, drive it and park it! Plus some campgrounds, wilderness roads, and ferries limit RV length, too. Start with deciding how many beds you require. The right layout can make an RV seem bigger, and choosing one with slide-outs gives you more space. If you plan to spend most of your time outside around the fire, you won’t need as much indoor space.
