Tips for RVing with Children
Traveling with your family is a great way to make memories and expand your children’s horizons. However, kids have unique needs that must be addressed during a trip if you want to make sure everyone has a good time. After all, riding in an RV for hours at a time is no picnic even for adults — for kids, it can be downright brutal in its monotony. And once you get to your destination, you may have some unhappy campers if you haven’t considered whether it’ll be fun for them.
To help you stave off tantrums and keep the peace, we’ve provided some tips for RVing with children so that all your family trips can go off without a hitch.
Establish a Routine
Children, like adults, benefit from keeping a regular routine. No doubt you’ve already got a routine established at home, which may require a bit of adjusting for travel. At breakfast, let the kids know what the plans are for each day of your trip so they know what to expect. Have your meals at regular times, with snacks in between so that children don’t get hungry.
Schedule bath times at the same time every day. Keep a firm bedtime and allow children a half-hour or so of calm playtime to read a story, play a board game, or chat before bed.
Create Secure Sleeping Arrangements
Kids can feel anxious about sleeping in a new place, so try to make sure that the sleeping berths feel secure for them. Every child should have their own space so they don’t feel too crowded. Curtains or other partitions can offer them some privacy and peace. Maintain the camper’s temperature so that it’s neither too hot nor too cold and dim the lights (but offer a nightlight for those who don’t like the dark). Sleeping bags are a nice way to reduce the amount of bedding you'll have to launder, and kids think they’re fun!
Offer Entertainment Options
On the road and between activities, you’ll need to have some entertainment choices for kids. Boredom is their worst enemy on a long drive. Road-friendly activities include sketchbooks, coloring books, reading, journaling, and board games. Try to limit their use of electronics and make their screen time educational wherever possible by downloading apps and games that are designed to teach. Each child should bring some of their favorite toys and books along for the ride.
