Ideally, most of your RV driving will be done during daylight hours, since this is when visibility is the highest and drivers are more alert. However, there will be times when you simply have to drive after dark, and whether you’re driving a motorhome or towing a trailer, you have to be much more cautious than the average driver, due to the amount of weight you’re pulling. Here are some tips on how to safely drive your RV after sunset.

1. Don’t Drive Tired

You should never drive while you’re exhausted or sick, but we’ve all done it. It’s best to avoid doing so whenever possible, though, particularly when you’re driving a much bigger vehicle. Stop and get some rest instead of trying to push through with caffeine and hope.

2. Keep Your Glass Clean

The windshield of your RV or towing vehicle needs to be streak-free to prevent glare. Clean both the interior and exterior with a glass cleaner and paper towels or newspaper. Make sure your rear-view mirrors and side mirrors and both windows are also clean so that you have a clear view of your surroundings.

3. Add Extra Lights Outside

Making your RV more visible to other motorists will help you to avoid an accident, too. Adding bright LED lights to your RV’s exterior and installing brighter bulbs in your headlights and taillights can significantly increase your RV’s visibility.
